Exploring The Archeological Site: Rachel

House of Ashes - Pazuzu - Rachel and Eric descending into the dig site

Rachel and Eric have to use their ropes again to descend even further into the caves. At this point, the perspective switches and you take control of Rachel. When you hit the bottom, you discover an old dig archeological dig site where researchers seem to have been studying the temple.

House of Ashes - Pazuzu - Rachel next to a decision wheel

Eric realizes that Caelus, the system they thought they saw a weapons silo with, must have just been picking up this old tech. Rachel can be sympathetic to his plight or angry that he got it so wrong.

  • Frustrated: No immediate consequences
  • Sympathetic: Positive point in Eric and Rachel's relationship, Rachel's "Sympathetic" trait is improved
House of Ashes - Pazuzu - Rachel next to a decision wheel (1)

Eric's reaction depends on whether he and Rachel have a bad relationship or a good relationship. He could have either reaction to both of Rachel's previous choices.

Eric Responds Defensively (Bad Relationship) Eric Responds Apologetically (Good Relationship)
When Eric insists that he can fix his mistake and accuses Rachel of not believing in him, Rachel can say they should focus on escaping or tell Eric he's done enough harm.
  • Assertive: No immediate consequences
  • Spiteful: Negative point in Eric and Rachel's relationship
When Eric apologizes for his mistake, Rachel has the option to be reassuring and say they've both made mistakes, or focus on finding a way out.
  • Assertive: No immediate consequences
  • Tender: Positive point in Eric and Rachel's relationship, Rachel's "Reassuring" trait is improved
House of Ashes - Pazuzu - Eric working with the generator

The pair decide to try and turn on the lights, but they need gas for the generator. You're given free rein of this room to look around, and there are a lot of Secrets to find. Secrets #12, 20, 24, 32, 34, 35, and 44 can be found here, as well as the White-Bordered Picture called Ultraviolet.

Now that you have those (or don't - up to you), just get the gas. Starting from the generator, turn around 180 degrees and head towards the other side of the room. There's a tent there, and gas canisters are laying in front of it. They'll be able to fill up the tank, but it begins to leak. To fix that, they'll need the grey tape lying on a desk near where the flare is burning.

House of Ashes - Pazuzu - Rachel next to a decision wheel (2)

Once you've found both of those materials, Rachel and Eric fix the generator together. There's a branching conversation here that differs based on two factors:

  1. A decision made during The Briefing: did Rachel agree to tell Eric about her affair with Nick, or not?
  2. Do Rachel and Eric have a generally good or bad relationship?

Rather than try to detail all the branches of this conversation (of which there are many), we will simply state that this is a chance to either build up a positive or negative relationship between Eric and Rachel. Rachel can express that she feels positively, negatively, or neutrally about rekindling their romance over the course of their talk. Though not directly, this will affect the 'Until Death' Bearing because, at the end of the game, Rachel can end up in a relationship with Nick, Eric, or neither.
